Ladakh, after the season turns
Ladakh in October feels spacious and elemental: thinner crowds, clearer light, colder nights and a landscape beginning its turn towards winter. The season asks for warmer layers and a little flexibility, but rewards travellers with a quieter experience of the mountains.
Good to know: Both October departures follow the same planned route. High-altitude stretches, including Khardung La and Umling La, remain subject to weather, permits, road conditions and traveller health. Safety takes priority, and the route may be adapted when required.

Prepare for early winter
Pangong and Hanle can have below-freezing nights. Proper winter layers are essential, not optional.

Cool, dry days around 12–18°C; nights near 0–3°C.
Khardung La · 5,359 m
Snow is possible and temperatures can fall well below freezing.
Pangong · 4,350 m
Exposed and very cold; nights may reach about −8°C to −12°C.
Hanle · 4,500 m
Cold and remote; nights may reach about −10°C to −15°C.
Pack for the cold: A heavy down jacket, thermal base layers, warm gloves, a covered head and proper sleep layers are essential for this journey.

Day 01Land in Leh — Rest Without Exception
Arrive, check in, rest and hydrate. If you feel comfortable, step out for Shanti Stupa in the late-afternoon light. October cold and altitude both reward patience.

Follow the Indus west to the Sangam, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and Alchi Monastery with its centuries-old murals.
Stay: Hotel, LehDay 03Khardung La to Nubra
Cross Khardung La, visit Diskit Monastery and reach Hunder for the dunes. A Bactrian camel ride is available as an optional experience.
Stay: Hotel or camp, NubraDay 04Yarab Tso and Panamik
Walk to the quiet waters of Yarab Tso and return via Panamik hot springs for an unhurried afternoon in Nubra.
Stay: Hotel or camp, NubraDay 05The Shyok River Road to Pangong
Leave early for the quieter Shyok route, arriving at Pangong as October light moves across the water.
Stay: Heated cottage or camp, PangongDay 06Pangong to Hanle
Wake to first light on Pangong, then continue through the remote Changthang landscape towards Hanle. Visit the monastery or observatory as time and local access allow, and step outside after dark beneath the clear night sky.
Stay: Homestay, HanleDay 07Umling La to Tso Moriri
Set out towards Umling La, subject to weather, permits, road conditions and health. Continue across the high plateau towards Tso Moriri and Korzok for a quiet evening beside the lake.
Stay: Guesthouse or camp, Tso MoririDay 08Tso Moriri to Leh
Leave after an early morning by the lake and return to Leh through the Indus Valley, bringing the journey to a close in the evening.

Cold at altitude is more serious than summer cold. Pack for the overnight temperatures, not only the daytime forecast.

Do both October batches follow the same route?
Yes. Both the 2–9 October and 16–23 October departures are planned on the same route through Nubra, Pangong, Hanle, Umling La and Tso Moriri.
Can the route change?
Yes. October travel in Ladakh depends on weather, permits and road conditions. Pass closures or local restrictions may require changes, and Marga will communicate them as early as possible.
Is Umling La guaranteed?
No. Umling La is attempted only when road, weather, permit, health and local operating conditions make the drive safe. The on-ground team’s decision takes priority.
How cold is Ladakh in October?
Days in Leh and Nubra can be crisp and pleasant, but high passes are much colder. Pangong and Hanle can have nights well below freezing, so proper thermals, a heavy down jacket, gloves, head covering and warm sleep layers are essential.
Is this suitable for a first-time Ladakh traveller?
Yes, provided you are medically fit for high-altitude travel, follow the acclimatisation plan and are comfortable with cold weather, long road days and route flexibility. Consult your doctor before booking.
Who can join the October batches?
The journey is open to all adult travellers. It is planned as a thoughtfully small group, and solo travellers are welcome to enquire.
How do I reserve a place?
Message Marga on WhatsApp with your preferred batch. We will confirm availability, current pricing and the operating details before requesting the 25% booking deposit.
Booking terms
Plain terms, shared early
Pricing depends on the final group size and is confirmed on enquiry. The complete terms are shared before any payment is requested.
- A 25% deposit confirms your place; the balance is due 30 days before departure.
- The published route is subject to weather, permits and road conditions. A safety-led route adjustment is not treated as a cancellation.
- If Marga cancels the trip entirely, a full refund is processed within seven working days.
- Pass closures, snowfall or government restrictions may require rescheduling or a 12-month credit note under the shared force-majeure terms.
- Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, cancellation and itinerary changes is strongly recommended.
